WordPress’ achilles heel – custom fields

WordPress is my platform of choice. I’ve been working with it since version 1.2 and it’s only gotten better. With the introduction of “Pages”, WordPress officially moved from being a blogging platform to a content management system and great strides continue to be made with each new release.

However, the biggest pain with WordPress is how custom fields are handled and the inability to create custom Write templates. Almost every client has some sort of customization they are looking for. Whether it’s as simple as attaching a PDF to a page all the way to entering real estate properties with tons of variables.

Why is it that I can’t create a custom Write page for my clients that has selects, custom inputs, etc?

This is a pretty standard feature in other content management systems.

There have been a few pushes this way in plugins (such as Flutter) but they are all buggy to a point of useless. This has forced me to write my own custom write pages for recent clients, but I continue to be surprised that this issue is never addressed or mentioned in future WordPress upgrades.

There are plenty of other content management systems that offer this and it seems like a no brainer in viewing WordPress as a CMS.

    Dude,

    You have a typo.
Heal: To move from disease to health
Heel: That thing that made Achilles vulnerable or the back pad on your foot.

By the way I found your blog through your Small Business Trends project and its beautiful.

    Keep up the good work.
